EXCLUSIVE — Gillibrand's calling for hearings & Senate vote on Lummis-Gillibrand stablecoin act
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (6-18-2024)
Who?
Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand — Agriculture Committee
LISTEN: Laslo & Gillibrand
Ask a Pol asks:
Any update on your crypto measure?
Key Gillibrand:
“The calendar’s shrinking. My ambition is to work with Sen. [Ron] Wyden (D-OR) and the Finance Committee to hold a hearing on market structure or markup my bill, with Sen. [Cynthia] Lummis (R-WY), on market structure,” Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand exclusively tells Ask a Pol. “If we could do that, then we can match what the House has done in terms of [Rep. Patrick] McHenry’s (R-NC) market structure bill.”
“…only bill that has a chance…in the Senate…”
“I think that's the only bill that has a chance of possibly getting a vote on in the Senate right now to match the House. I also believe that Sen. [Debbie] Stabenow (D-MI) will pursue for her bill to provide oversight for the commodities — for digital commodities — but that's just half of the market. And that's why the market structure bill’s so important, because it outlines where Sen. Stabenow’s bill would fit in,” Gillibrand says. “There was a lot of misunderstanding last time, because they didn't understand that Sen. Stabenow’s bill was just one piece.”
Caught our ear:
“Most senators don't have much knowledge about digital assets, and so I'm hoping to have a hearing or two so we could change that,” Gillibrand tells Ask a Pol.
Below find a rough transcript of Ask a Pol’s exclusive interview with Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), slightly edited for clarity.
TRANSCRIPT: Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
SCENE: Ask a Pol’s Matt Laslo is on the 3rd floor of the Capitol running to grab his bag before rushing to an off-campus meeting. On his way to the Senate Radio-TV Gallery tucked up in a 4th floor attic — many senators have their hideaway offices tucked on the other side of the media gallery — he bumps into Gillibrand and an aide.
Laslo stops. Chats. Then proceeds to ride the Senators Only elevator down with Gillibrand.
Matt Laslo: “What are you up by my office for, ma’am?”
Kristen Gillibrand: “Hey.”
ML: “Were you in there for Bill Nelson last week when he addressed the caucus?”
KG: “I wasn’t there.”
ML: “No?”
KG: “How was it? What was it on?”
ML: “I don't know. Space.”
KG: “He’s probably talking about NASA.”
ML: “I wonder if he — yeah, I bet it was on NASA, but I don’t know what he discussed.”
Gillibrand and her aide are entering the elevator and Laslo slides in and plays doorman.
Elevator Announcer: “3rd floor. Going down.”
ML: “Any update on your crypto measure?”
KG: “So, off the record.”
ML: “Yeah?”
Gillibrand goes off the record for a smidge over :30 seconds, which is why our podcast audio cuts out for same amount of time.
ML: “Can I ask you on the record…”
KG: “Yeah, yeah. Go ahead.”
ML: “...is this getting more difficult now cause the calendar’s shrinking?”
KG: “The calendar’s shrinking. My ambition is to work with Sen. Wyden and the Finance Committee to hold a hearing on market structure or markup my bill, with Sen. Lummis, on market structure.”
ML: “Yeah?’
KG: “If we could do that, then we can match what the House has done in terms of the [Rep. Patrick] McHenry’s market structure bill.”
ML: “Yeah?”

KG: “Yeah, most senators don't have much knowledge about digital assets, and so I'm hoping to have a hearing or two so we could change that.”
